Today I went to my first meeting with Alissa at the L Brands Office. As I drove up to the L. Brands entrance, I was directed to building 3, where I would be meeting Alissa. Once parked, I walked into a large revolving door and was met by security personnel. I told the guard my name and whom I was there to meet. He handed me a visitors pass and directed me to a waiting area. As I sat, I looked around the enormous building surrounding me. There are many television screens playing the Victoria Secret Fashion Show on a loop. To my left, multiple staircases led every which way. Behind me, was a hallway of glass rooms which I assumed were for conferences. Many professional looking people walked up and down the stairs, talking and laughing.
After a few minutes, Alissa came down and greeted me. She was very nice, and I instantly liked her. She directed me downstairs to Starbucks. After treating me to starbucks, we sat at a large wooden table. Alissa began to ask me questions about myself such as, “What are your favorite subjects?” This allowed us to begin to get to know each other. Alissa explained to me what she does in her career. In summary, she travels the world looking for places to put L Brand stores, working with international partners to deliver the same store experience in other countries. Because I enjoy traveling, this sounded outstanding. She also told me a little about the other numerous careers in her building. I could see the passion Alissa has for her job and company through the way she talked so highly of them. She explained to me where she started in the company and how she ended up where she is at now. She said she loves what she does, and I could tell she meant it. One thing she said that stuck out to me when she was talking about her previous jobs was, “You may not love every job you have, but you have to find something about it to love.” This was very cool to hear because it showed me that even though I may not be ecstatic to do something, I have to look at the opportunity optimistically.
After discussing more about the dynamics of the company, Alissa informed me of some things she has in mind for me to see and do in the following visits we have together. She also told me that she plans to challenge me to think critically. I thought this sounded intimidating, yet, exciting because I feel critical thinking is a necessary skill that we should be challenged to use more often.
By the end of our meeting, I am even more excited to start learning. Everything we talked about sounds very interesting. I believe this will be an insightful and incredible opportunity for me, and I am very eager to come back and start.
